Absztrakt: Jelen tanulmányban a szerző a magyar–ukrán kapcsolatépítés jogi, diplomáciai, illetve protokolláris nehézségeit igyekszik bemutatni az 1980-as és az 1990-es évek fordulóján. Ezek a nehézségek alapvetően abból adódtak, hogy a két fél közötti kapcsolatépítésre rányomta bélyegét a Szovjetunió államszocialista felépítése, a későbbiekben pedig annak krízise, ami végeredményben a bipoláris világrend felbomlásához és önálló államok megalakulásához vezetett. A tanulmányban összehasonlításra és elemzésre kerül a Szovjetunió 1977-es és az Ukrán SZSZK 1978-as alkotmánya a szovjet tagköztársaságok önrendelkezési jogának tükrében. Külön szó esik az ukrán Szuverenitási Deklaráció szerepéről a kétoldalú kapcsolatépítésben. A szerző levéltári példák alapján igyekszik rámutatni, hogy milyen körülmények közepette alakult a magyar–ukrán kapcsolatrendszer, mik voltak a felek céljai és érdekei. Külön kiemelésre kerül a két ország akkori politikai és diplomáciai elitjének véleményezése a kétoldalú kapcsolatokat illetően.

Abstract: In the paper, the author tries to present the legal, diplomatic and protocol difficulties in the building of Hungarian-Ukrainian relations at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. These difficulties were mainly because the building of relations between the two sides was marked by the state socialist structure of the Soviet Union and later by its crisis, which ultimately led to the disintegration of the bipolar world order and the formation of independent states. The article compares and analyzes the Constitution of the Soviet Union (1977) and the Constitution of the Ukrainian SSR (1978) in the light of the right of self-determination of the Soviet member republics. Special mention is made of the role of the Ukrainian Declaration of Sovereignty in building bilateral relations. The study builds on a large source base. Using archival examples, the author tries to point out the circumstances in which the Hungarian–Ukrainian relations system developed, what were the goals and interests of the parties. Special emphasis is placed on the opinions of political and diplomatic elites of the two countries regarding the bilateral relations of the countries.
