Abstract: Central Asia became one of the potential goals of Russian expansion in the 19th century. Russia’s intrusion into the region was carried out in several waves. First, the conquest of the Kazah steppes was accomplished, then the three Muslim khanates further south got their attention. Following the defeat of the Khanate of Khokand and the Emirate of Bukhara, the Russian army turned its forces against the Khanate of Khiva. Concerning Russia, this was not the first attempt to attack the Khanate. As the previous two military campaigns had turned out to be fiascos on the part of Russia, a carefully planned and well-organized military action was about to start this time. The chain of events of this campaign was recorded by more participants, therefore we are in possession of some contemporary documents. The accounts/journals of two eyewitnesses (an American one and a German one) are to be considered the most important of all. These two had the chance to be present at the siege of the last Muslim fort of Central Asia. The present study proposes to present the events of this campaign based on these two accounts. Furthermore, an attempt will be made to investigate the impartiality of these Western authors in their reports either on the campaign, or Russia herself.
